Nor was the seaturtle the only creature to notice her singing.
As She sang all within hearing stopped as if mesmerized by the sound.
They began to migrate toward her as if drawn by magic, and to whisper
and marvel among themselves at the wonderfully harmonious sound which
was blessing their ears. Silent reverence overcame them as She
continued to sing and each creature dared not breathe loudly for fear of
distracting from her singing.
By the time She had finished her Morning Song, nearly every creature on
the island had arrived to discover the origin of such delightful music.
In the days to come it was a time that they would all recall over and
over again; for time became divided by that day and afterwards they
referred to events as either before of after the enchanted birds came.
When She had finished her singing and a period of silence had been
observed, everyone noticed that He stepped forward and stood beside her,
tall and proud and handsome. He looked down at all the creatures
for a moment and saw how they had already come to worship her.
Then, with a signal to her, a quick glance, they lifted from the branch
with a single flap of the wings and glided two to the pool of clear
water which dominated the central part of the island.
There, in the coolness of the morning, they drank and refreshed
themselves with gentle splashing. The calm serenity of the moment
was invaluable to the old seaturtle, for he felt that all was right in
the world, and whatever came to pass he could endure with this vision to
recall.
Together She and He set about to explore this new home in which they had
come to dwell. It was not a very large island, but one that was
pretty and peaceful. Of course the savagery of the animal kingdom
was present, but it was not so obvious or violent that it destroyed the
solemnity of the place. And food and water were abundant.
Each afternoon a rainshower would come to relieve the heat, which was
oppressive at its peak. A cool breeze usually accompanied sundown.
After just a few days the inhabitants of the island were enamored of
these enchanted birds; for there was a special aura about them which was
unmistakably mysterious and blessed. Their joy in each other and
the harmony exhibited in their daily lives with each other, their fellow
creatures and environment were taken as signals of their specialness.
