The old seaturtle had thought that he would surely die when they
discovered that the Boy was dead and he saw how openly and pitifully She
wept and grieved at her lost. But he did not die. He lived
to see how She regained her strength and began anew to sing her songs.
It was then that he finally knew that her strength came from within and
even death could not overcome her there.
As the days passed her song grew stronger. Once again She filled
each day with joy and love. He stood by her side and supported her
as before. The creatures on the island felt even more blessed than
before and loved her even more.
Then one night the Boy came to her in a vision and She experienced a
revelation. Afterwards She felt the Boy’s spirit very strongly and
She felt assured, as She had never felt before, that She would be with
the Boy again and he would reconcile her grief and fill her emptiness.
She knew that it would be so, and She took comfort in the knowledge.
And She became very more beautiful and even more gracious than ever
before.
Then one beautiful, silent, moonlit night, the two enchanted birds
floated peacefully away on the warm breeze. The old seaturtle
realized that was how his dying would be and he bravely swam out to sea,
no longer afraid to live or die. Sometimes, for years after, in
the early morning hours, it seemed as if a song could be heard drifting
across the island. While no one could ever discover its origin,
those who had been there longest knew its source.
